Global COVID-19 Cases Surpassed 123 Million Cases
April 21, 2021 Editorial Reszon

Johns Hopkins University reported that as of March 2021, the global COVID-19 cases reached more than 123 million cases with global death increased to 2.71 million.

The U.S. is currently accounting for 24% of cases at 29.8 million. The U.S. also recorded the highest number of deaths, accounting for 20% of deaths globally. However, outside of the U.S., Brazil has the second highest number of COVID-19 cases, with more than 12 million cases and death toll of 294,042.

A top WHO expert, Maria Van Kerkhove reported that the global death count has been increasing after showing six weeks of decline and the number of reported cases increased by 8% in four of the WHO’s six regions. The increase is partly due to the spread of COVID-19 variant that first emerged in Britain, before spreading to other countries.

Southeast Asia also recorded a 49% week-to-week increase in number of COVID-19 cases with Philippines reported 29% rise.

Reszon Diagnostics had introduced Reszon COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test and Reszon COVID-19 Rapid Antibody Test for export markets. Both kits come in the pack size of 25 test cassette format.

Reszon COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test is a single use lateral flow immunoassay rapid test intended to qualitatively detect specific SARS-CoV-2 antigen in human nasopharyngeal swab specimen from individuals who are suspected of COVID-19. It is intended to be used by the professionals as a screening test and as an aid in the early diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection

Reszon COVID-19 Rapid IgG/IgM Test is a single use lateral flow immunoassay rapid test intended to qualitatively detect IgM and IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, in human whole blood, serum or plasma within 15-20 minutes. Reszon COVID-19 Rapid IgG/IgM Test is intended for use as an aid in screening individuals with adaptive immune response to SARS-CoV-2 which indicates recent or prior infection.

At present, the gold standard for detecting SARS-CoV-2 infection is RT-qPCR. However, this molecular diagnostic method requires sophisticated equipment and highly trained laboratory technicians. Moreover, this method gives positive results when SARS-CoV-2 is still present in the body. The molecular lab tests unable to identify individuals who went through an infection, recovered and cleared the virus from their bodies especially when the viral load diminishes rapidly 9 or 10 days after onset of symptoms.

Both Reszon COVID-19 Rapid Antigen and Antibody Test are easy to use, cost-efficient and can be tested within 15-20 minutes at the point of care. This allows health authorities to isolate individuals who are suspected of COVID-19 from the community and lowers the risk of disease transmission.
