As of 3 August 2020, the number of COVID-19 cases has surpassed 18 million, with at least 18,011,763 cases being registered and the infection rate continues to accelerate. The global death cases due to COVID-19 are recorded at 687,941.
The United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean region contributed to more than half of the global cases with the United States having the most number of cases at a record of 4,657,693 cases including 154,793 deaths. The cumulative cases in Latin America and the Caribbean surpassed the 5 million mark with Brazil being the worst-hit country recorded at 2,733,677 cases and 94,104 deaths.
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a novel coronavirus called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, formerly known as 2019-nCoV). This disease was declared as a global pandemic by WHO in March 2020. The transmission route for COVID-19 is either through respiratory droplets when symptomatic people sneeze or cough, through airborne particles, or through contact with an infected surface.
People of all ages can have mild to severe COVID-19 symptoms and some of the symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, and fever or chills. However, symptoms appear only 2-14 days after being exposed to the virus. Currently, there is no specific treatment or vaccine against COVID-19, but prevention is the next best option. Some of the prevention steps include social distancing, regular washing of hands with soap or hand sanitizer, and regular use of face mask in public areas.
Reszon Diagnostics had introduced Reszon COVID-19 Rapid IgG/IgM Test for export markets. The kit comes in the pack size of 25 test cassette format, is a single use lateral flow immunoassay rapid test intended to qualitatively detect IgM and IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, in human whole blood, serum or plasma within 15-20 minutes. Reszon COVID-19 Rapid IgG/Ig M Test is intended for use as an aid in screening individuals with adaptive immune response to SARS-CoV-2 which indicates recent or prior infection.
At present, the gold standard for detecting SARS-CoV-2 infection is RT-qPCR. However, this molecular diagnostic method requires sophisticated equipment and highly trained laboratory technicians. Moreover, this method gives positive results when SARS-CoV-2 is still present in the body. The molecular lab tests unable to identify individuals who went through an infection, recovered and cleared the virus from their bodies especially when the viral load diminishes rapidly 9 or 10 days after onset of symptoms.
